There are finds - in and around Bruges - that date back to Roman times, although Bruges is not mentioned in history until the middle ages. Because in medieval times the settlement was connected to the sea, it was the site of cultural exchanges between different nationalities: English, Scandinavian, Italian, Germany.
The peak of its economic and financial pinnacle was reached in the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Sadly, its role was later taken over by Antwerp, as its importance rapidly declined due to the silting up of the Zwin estuary. As a result of this sudden decay the people of Bruges suffered great poverty and were unable to renew or expand the town. One benefit of this was that because of its minor industrial importance, our town was spared in both world wars. That is why Bruges has kept its medieval appearance to the present day.
